Easy Things to Draw for 3-Year-Olds
At three, drawing is all about the joy of making marks — big scribbles, bold circles, and wobbly lines. The best ideas are simple shapes a toddler can finish and feel proud of, with no “right” way to do them.
8 easy things to draw
- a big round sun with straight lines poking out
- a bouncy balloon on a long string
- a smiley face with two dot eyes
- a fluffy cloud made of round bumps
- a caterpillar made of circles in a row
- a flower with petals around a circle
- a ball rolling on the ground
- raindrops falling from a cloud
What can a 3-year-old draw?
Most three-year-olds are moving from scribbles to their first real shapes: circles, dots, and up-and-down lines. They draw for the feel of it, not for a likeness, so pick subjects that are basically one big shape plus a couple of details a grown-up can add together with them.
Tips for helping a 3-year-old draw
- 1Use chunky crayons. Fat crayons or washable markers are easier for little hands to grip and press.
- 2Draw it together. Make the first shape, then let your child fill it in or add dots and lines their own way.
- 3Cheer the scribbles. Name what you see (“so many circles!”) instead of asking what it is — it keeps drawing fun.
